Winter sports update; projects progressing

posted Mar 8, 2018, 8:09 AM by Exira-EHK Administrator

The good news is that March is here and hopefully the cold and snow will soon be a distant memory and we will be able to have a normal school week which will allow our students to get back on a routine.

I want to thank everyone that went to Des Moines last week to support the girl's basketball team. Our communities were well represented and our students were complimented on their behavior as I had several people tell me they were some of the politest student fans. It is always nice to hear positives from individuals who work at these events that we have great students in our district!

The girls qualified for state for the fourth year in a row! It was a great season led by our two Seniors, Sophia Peppers and Kealey Nelson. There are not many student-athletes that can say they made it to state all four years of their career. We have a strong nucleus returning next year, but the two seniors who both scored over 1,000 points for their career will create a gap that others will need to fill.
The girls lost a tough semi-final game to 3-time state champion Springville. Sophia was named to the State All-Tournament team for the second year in a row which is a tremendous honor. Sophia and Kealey were 1st team All-Conference and Ellie Schultes was 2nd team. Congratulations to Coach Petersen and his staff and to all of the girls on the basketball team!

The boy's basketball team finished a successful season and had 3 representatives on the All-Conference teams: Cole Burmeister 1st team, and Josh Pettepier and Dakota Rold 2nd team. In addition, Cole Madsen and Trey Nelson were honorable mention.  The season ended with a loss to state qualifier Council Bluffs Saint Albert. Cole Madsen, our lone senior, will be missed next year, but with a number of returners, the team should be focused on their goals for next year.

The wrestlers, with only one senior finishing the season, grew as a team and Dawson Carey was our representative in districts. It was good to see a few of our younger students show improvement and hopefully, we will be able to add to our line up next year.

At the February board meeting, contractors were approved for our general obligation bond projects. I will provide additional timelines as we meet with the contractors and figure out starting dates. The bids came in at budget which allows us to move forward instead of sending out to rebid with different designs. KPE, our architect, and the school board were pleased with the number of bids we received and were happy that some of our local contractors submitted a bid and were awarded different parts of the enhancements.

This facility update could not have happened without the support of our communities because we had 72% vote yes for the board which is impressive with the economy and our demographics. Once the projects have been completed we will open up the buildings for the communities to see the improvements.

Have a great few weeks and hopefully we will see Spring soon!  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Exira-EHK to have a full day of school Thursday, March 1st

posted Feb 23, 2018, 7:44 AM by Exira-EHK Administrator

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members:

On Thursday, March 1st we will have a full day of school.  There will not be a 12:30 dismissal for professional development. After looking at the number of instructional hours we have missed due to weather delays, cancellations, and early releases this is an opportunity to have a full-day of school.

As of today next week we will have a 12:30 dismissal on Wednesday, Feb. 28th, a full day of school on Thursday, March 1st, and depending on how the game goes on Wednesday will determine what Friday looks like.

I appreciate everyone's flexibility during this time period between winter break and when spring arrives.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Trevor Miller

Updates on Girls State Basketball Tournament; school to dismiss at 12:30 on February 28th

posted Feb 22, 2018, 11:33 AM by Exira-EHK Administrator

Community Members:

The Exira-EHK high school girl’s basketball team qualified for the Girls State Tournament which will be held the week of Feb. 26th . This is the 4th consecutive year the girls have qualified for the state tournament.

Our girls will play Wednesday Feb. 28th  at 3:15 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines vs AGWSR. Due to the game time we will have a 12:30 dismissal from school to allow families to travel to Des Moines to support the team.

Mr. Petersen has said the state is not providing advanced ticket sales this year. All tickets must be purchased at Wells Fargo so you might want to arrive a little early to purchase tickets. The ticket window is on the South side of Wells Fargo Arena.

The state t-shirt order forms are due on Friday Feb. 23rd at 10:30 AM to allow for the order to be submitted on time.

If the girls win on Wednesday, they will play again Friday March 2nd . We will communicate with everyone about Friday’s schedule after the game on Wednesday.

Sincerely,

Trevor Miller
Superintendent/High School Principal

Happy Holidays from Superintendent Miller!

posted Dec 20, 2017, 6:47 AM by Matt Schmitz

Reminder we will have a 2:30 Dismissal on Friday December 22nd to start holiday break and students will return on Thursday January 4th. It is hard to believe that the first semester will end this Friday. The first semester has flown by and I know our students and staff are working hard to end this week on a positive note before the holiday break.

I wanted to share a few of the positives that have been happening in our district this semester. The first is our staff has been working hard in the high school during the newly implemented seminar time to help our students complete their work, make up tests, and help students who just need a little additional support to help ensure success. The staff has started to analyze data and develop plans for individual students. We put together a data chart that is based upon 10 different indicators that have been developed. This is a fluid document and we run the data every few weeks to see how our students are progressing.

Second positive is at our elementary and involves Spartan time where all hands are on deck to work with students in small groups. As most of you know one of the assessments used is the Fast Assessment and our teachers use this as a screener and use additional interventions to find out the core area that needs improvement. It is great to see teachers and paras working with small groups of students to help ensure our students success.

Third positive is our Middle School has added a reading period in addition to the Literacy period. This will help our students to master skills in literacy including grammar, spelling etc. in addition to having a period dedicated to reading to hopefully develop a love of reading for our students. This is a work in progress and will be adjusted every quarter.

Fourth positive is we are moving forward with the school improvement plan and hopefully will have all improvements completed before school starts next year. It is impressive that we passed our bond in September with a 72% yes vote. The support of our district by our communities will help our students have access to the best facilities possible. Thank you for your support for our students and staff. We could not be making our improvements without you. I will provide more detailed plans in January and February when plans and contractors have been awarded.

Those are just a few of the positives that are happening at the Exira-EHK District. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook as we have daily/weekly updates on activities, early dismissals, etc.

A reminder if you have not updated your phone or email please contact Mr. Humphrey to be part of the notification when we have a late start, no school, or an early dismissal due to weather. In Iowa you just never know when the weather will change.

Have a great holiday season!

Sincerely,
Trevor Miller

October Update

posted Oct 3, 2017, 1:13 PM by Matt Schmitz

Happy October. It is hard to believe that it is already the second of October and we are already past mid-term of the first quarter.

September 12th:
In September, our voters passed a $3.9-Million-dollar bond. This will allow for a number of necessary upgrades to happen at Exira-EHK and I want to personally thank everyone who came out to vote. The measure passed with a 72% yes vote as the requirement was 60%. It was great to see the number of people who came out as we had 357 voters come out compared to just 76 with our last school board election. In addition to the bond measure: Kevin Petersen, Tamie Fahn were re-elected to the board and Pat Greving was elected. Tom Benton decided not to run for re-election again after 14 years of being on the school board. Thank you Tom for your years of service in our district and communities.

I will have updates on the bond and facility planning in the near future.

Homecoming:
It has been great to see our students involved in many different activities and the success they have accomplished. Congratulations to our homecoming King Cole Madsen and Queen Sophia Peppers. The week of homecoming was busy for all involved with the different activity days, coronation, football game, and dance. The parade and pep rally went well considering how warm it was by the windmill.

Fast Bridges:
The state of Iowa has switched host sites for our K-6 Fluency and Accuracy testing and when you make large changes there are challenges. Our teachers have adjusted as issues are worked out with the state. These are the same test that have occurred over the past few years so I am looking forward to seeing the growth of our students.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Reminder: Parent-Teacher Conferences are Oct. 24th and 26th from 4:30-7:30 at both schools please plan to attend so you can meet the teachers and receive positive feedback. If your students are like mine when I ask them how their day was I get it was fine and what did you learn they give me short sentences. Elementary Teachers are sending home or have already had sign ups. If you can not make your time, please communicate with your child’s teacher to reschedule. Middle School and High School Parents please take this opportunity to stop in.

We will also not have school on Friday October 27th due to conferences on Tuesday and Thursday of that week.

I am looking forward to the month of October and being in more classrooms to see all of the positives that are going on in the Exira-EHK Community School District.

If you have questions, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Trevor Miller

Start of the 2017-18 School Year

posted Aug 28, 2017, 7:23 AM by Exira-EHK Administrator

Start of the School Year:

Dear Parents/Guardians, and Community Members:
It is hard to believe that the 2017-18 School Year has started. It was great seeing all our students last week and everyone started to get into a routine by Friday.

The fall activities have started with Football, Cross Country and Volleyball. JH practices start this week for Football and Volleyball. It is impressive to see the number of students who participate in our extra-curricular activities whether it be a sport, band/chorus, FFA, just to name a few in addition to sports.

Our teachers have been working hard this summer in the elementary with our new reading curriculum that was adopted.

The high school has been working on implementing Multi-Tier-Systems of Support to help all of our students whether low, high, or in the middle to focus on particular skills to enhance their education.

A few reminders we will not have school on September 4th because of Labor Day and SCHOOL PICTURES will be Monday September 11th.

The school board election and bond vote are on September 12th please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week.

2017-18 Welcome Letter; school year calendar

posted Aug 6, 2017, 1:03 PM by Exira-EHK Administrator

On behalf of the Exira-EHK Administrative Team, it is our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone as we embark on year two of our journey together in 2017-18. I have been busy this summer; as I will also be a shared Superintendent with IKM-Manning. I will be in the Exira-EHK District three days a week and the IKM-Manning District two days a week. I am excited to build upon our success from last year. During the 2016-2017 school year, the focus was on active engagement and backward design for all staff. The secondary staff has started the process of planning and incorporating MTSS into our student’s daily lives. The elementary will have a new literacy curriculum that will benefit our students.

To those who are new to district, we hope that you will quickly feel at home within your building and become involved within the school and district. August 17th will be a day for our new teachers to work with their mentors. We will continue to implement educational strategies to ensure academic excellence, 21st century skills, and positive character development for all students.

As Administrators at Exira-EHK, we will continue to challenge the staff to get out of your comfort zone and not be afraid of failure. The goal of doing this is to continue to grow as an individual to help ensure growth for all of our students. We will continue with the walk thru program, IPI data collection, and collaboration amongst staff.

This is an exciting time, as we updated our TLC plan and now have 1.5 Instructional Coaches in the district to help drive our instruction. It is also a focus of ours to support our faculty and continue to foster an atmosphere that promotes a learning community characterized by child centered instruction and decisions, best practices ensuring academic excellence, trust, respect, faculty community involvement, consistent constructive communication/feedback, and the recognition of both student and staff successes. We are committed to supporting the Exira-EHK team in providing a high quality, Iowa Core-standards aligned education that is focused on student learning and data driven results.

I will be sending out the complete In-Service Calendar next Wednesday after we have our MTSS team meeting on Tuesday.

  • August 17th 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. New Teachers and Mentors
  • August 18th 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. In-service
  • August 21st 8:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. In-service August 22nd 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. In-service
