October Update

posted Oct 3, 2017, 1:13 PM by Matt Schmitz

Happy October. It is hard to believe that it is already the second of October and we are already past mid-term of the first quarter.

September 12th:
In September, our voters passed a $3.9-Million-dollar bond. This will allow for a number of necessary upgrades to happen at Exira-EHK and I want to personally thank everyone who came out to vote. The measure passed with a 72% yes vote as the requirement was 60%. It was great to see the number of people who came out as we had 357 voters come out compared to just 76 with our last school board election. In addition to the bond measure: Kevin Petersen, Tamie Fahn were re-elected to the board and Pat Greving was elected. Tom Benton decided not to run for re-election again after 14 years of being on the school board. Thank you Tom for your years of service in our district and communities.

I will have updates on the bond and facility planning in the near future.

It has been great to see our students involved in many different activities and the success they have accomplished. Congratulations to our homecoming King Cole Madsen and Queen Sophia Peppers. The week of homecoming was busy for all involved with the different activity days, coronation, football game, and dance. The parade and pep rally went well considering how warm it was by the windmill.

Fast Bridges:
The state of Iowa has switched host sites for our K-6 Fluency and Accuracy testing and when you make large changes there are challenges. Our teachers have adjusted as issues are worked out with the state. These are the same test that have occurred over the past few years so I am looking forward to seeing the growth of our students.

Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Reminder: Parent-Teacher Conferences are Oct. 24th and 26th from 4:30-7:30 at both schools please plan to attend so you can meet the teachers and receive positive feedback. If your students are like mine when I ask them how their day was I get it was fine and what did you learn they give me short sentences. Elementary Teachers are sending home or have already had sign ups. If you can not make your time, please communicate with your child’s teacher to reschedule. Middle School and High School Parents please take this opportunity to stop in.

We will also not have school on Friday October 27th due to conferences on Tuesday and Thursday of that week.

I am looking forward to the month of October and being in more classrooms to see all of the positives that are going on in the Exira-EHK Community School District.

If you have questions, please let me know.

Start of the 2017-18 School Year

Start of the School Year:

Dear Parents/Guardians, and Community Members:
It is hard to believe that the 2017-18 School Year has started. It was great seeing all our students last week and everyone started to get into a routine by Friday.

The fall activities have started with Football, Cross Country and Volleyball. JH practices start this week for Football and Volleyball. It is impressive to see the number of students who participate in our extra-curricular activities whether it be a sport, band/chorus, FFA, just to name a few in addition to sports.

Our teachers have been working hard this summer in the elementary with our new reading curriculum that was adopted.

The high school has been working on implementing Multi-Tier-Systems of Support to help all of our students whether low, high, or in the middle to focus on particular skills to enhance their education.

A few reminders we will not have school on September 4th because of Labor Day and SCHOOL PICTURES will be Monday September 11th.

The school board election and bond vote are on September 12th please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week.

2017-18 Welcome Letter; school year calendar

posted Aug 6, 2017, 1:03 PM by Exira-EHK Administrator

On behalf of the Exira-EHK Administrative Team, it is our pleasure to extend a warm welcome to everyone as we embark on year two of our journey together in 2017-18. I have been busy this summer; as I will also be a shared Superintendent with IKM-Manning. I will be in the Exira-EHK District three days a week and the IKM-Manning District two days a week. I am excited to build upon our success from last year. During the 2016-2017 school year, the focus was on active engagement and backward design for all staff. The secondary staff has started the process of planning and incorporating MTSS into our student’s daily lives. The elementary will have a new literacy curriculum that will benefit our students.

To those who are new to district, we hope that you will quickly feel at home within your building and become involved within the school and district. August 17th will be a day for our new teachers to work with their mentors. We will continue to implement educational strategies to ensure academic excellence, 21st century skills, and positive character development for all students.

As Administrators at Exira-EHK, we will continue to challenge the staff to get out of your comfort zone and not be afraid of failure. The goal of doing this is to continue to grow as an individual to help ensure growth for all of our students. We will continue with the walk thru program, IPI data collection, and collaboration amongst staff.

This is an exciting time, as we updated our TLC plan and now have 1.5 Instructional Coaches in the district to help drive our instruction. It is also a focus of ours to support our faculty and continue to foster an atmosphere that promotes a learning community characterized by child centered instruction and decisions, best practices ensuring academic excellence, trust, respect, faculty community involvement, consistent constructive communication/feedback, and the recognition of both student and staff successes. We are committed to supporting the Exira-EHK team in providing a high quality, Iowa Core-standards aligned education that is focused on student learning and data driven results.

I will be sending out the complete In-Service Calendar next Wednesday after we have our MTSS team meeting on Tuesday.

  • August 17th 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. New Teachers and Mentors
  • August 18th 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. In-service
  • August 21st 8:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. In-service August 22nd 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. In-service

Exira-EHK Schools collaborates with Heartland AEA to establish plan for district's future

posted Aug 2, 2017, 2:24 PM by Exira-EHK Administrator   [ updated Aug 2, 2017, 2:24 PM ]

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Community Members:

With change in administration, the Exira-EHK Schools believed it was the perfect time to come together to design a plan for the district's future. Prior to the start of the 2016-2017 school year last summer, the district and Heartland AEA partnered to start a collaborative process, which included a district annual planning meeting in which Heartland AEA's Shannon Harken, professional learning and leadership consultant, served as a facilitator.

The planning meeting members established a desired state for the district, identified the current state of the district, and began action planning to meet their targets. With a new district mission, vision, guiding principles, and motto their clarified focus would help ensure that their work would be strategic and help them fulfill their mission.

Please take a moment to read the complete collaboration spotlight article for further details on this initiative.

Thank you again,

Trevor Miller, Superintendent
Exira-Elk Horn-Kimbalton CSD
