Happy Holidays from Superintendent Miller!

posted Dec 20, 2017, 6:47 AM by Matt Schmitz
Reminder we will have a 2:30 Dismissal on Friday December 22nd to start holiday break and students will return on Thursday January 4th. It is hard to believe that the first semester will end this Friday. The first semester has flown by and I know our students and staff are working hard to end this week on a positive note before the holiday break.

I wanted to share a few of the positives that have been happening in our district this semester. The first is our staff has been working hard in the high school during the newly implemented seminar time to help our students complete their work, make up tests, and help students who just need a little additional support to help ensure success. The staff has started to analyze data and develop plans for individual students. We put together a data chart that is based upon 10 different indicators that have been developed. This is a fluid document and we run the data every few weeks to see how our students are progressing.

Second positive is at our elementary and involves Spartan time where all hands are on deck to work with students in small groups. As most of you know one of the assessments used is the Fast Assessment and our teachers use this as a screener and use additional interventions to find out the core area that needs improvement. It is great to see teachers and paras working with small groups of students to help ensure our students success.

Third positive is our Middle School has added a reading period in addition to the Literacy period. This will help our students to master skills in literacy including grammar, spelling etc. in addition to having a period dedicated to reading to hopefully develop a love of reading for our students. This is a work in progress and will be adjusted every quarter.

Fourth positive is we are moving forward with the school improvement plan and hopefully will have all improvements completed before school starts next year. It is impressive that we passed our bond in September with a 72% yes vote. The support of our district by our communities will help our students have access to the best facilities possible. Thank you for your support for our students and staff. We could not be making our improvements without you. I will provide more detailed plans in January and February when plans and contractors have been awarded.

Those are just a few of the positives that are happening at the Exira-EHK District. Please follow us on Twitter and Facebook as we have daily/weekly updates on activities, early dismissals, etc.

A reminder if you have not updated your phone or email please contact Mr. Humphrey to be part of the notification when we have a late start, no school, or an early dismissal due to weather. In Iowa you just never know when the weather will change.

Have a great holiday season!
