The Exira-EHK HS TAG service project will benefit both our students and staff in the upcoming school year. We would like to supply each teacher with a “Spartan Supply Crate.” This will include the essential supplies needed for their students’ school year such as Crayola markers, dry erase markers, crayons, glue sticks, pencils, scissors, erasers, facial tissues, and more. In recent years, teachers have had to use their own funds to support their students in need of more supplies. We are creating this project to benefit both the teachers with these additional supplies. Due to this year’s circumstances, we have come to find out that our students are in dire need of these supplies. Since the beginning of this school year, we have been working towards our goal of supplying students with items that they need. We are planning to have these Spartan Supply Crates ready by the start of the 2021 school year. We would like to ask for your participation in donating funds to our TAG program to support us in purchasing these supplies for each teacher. Our program will make sure each donation gets used wisely and distributed to each teacher. Any amount will be greatly appreciated! Any businesses, clubs, or individuals who donate to our project will be recognized for their contribution. Please make checks payable for Spartan TAG and mail to Exira-EHK Schools, 4114 Madison St, Box 388, Elk Horn, Iowa 51531. We would like to collect all donations by April 30th, 2021. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Lisa Dreier, high school TAG instructor at 712-764-4606 or email@example.com. Parents and Guardians, Congratulations to the Exira-EHK Girls Basketball Team for earning a trip to the Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament with their win over Lenox last night! March 8th. Elementary Students: • PK-2: Teachers will send home a packet of learning for students to complete and return to school on Monday, March 8th. • 3-5: Teachers will hold “office time” to meet with students and provide a learning activity for students to complete by Monday, March 8th. What's Happening at Exira-EHK Elementary!!!! Well, they had a fun day on Monday with the announcement of their One School, One Book. Here is some information about it: "We are excited to announce the start of our fifth installment of One School One Book program that began Monday! We have had some exciting titles in the past with learning more about Ivan the real life gorilla, traveling to Antartica to learn about the penguins from Mr. Poppers, realized that all giants aren't scary in The BFG, and oh, where do we start with last years, How to Eat Fried Worms?! That one was A LOT of fun!! This year's book will be a flashback for any parents that remember from your childhood that sweet little mutt named Benji!! Benji is always up for an adventure and this time, we will go along with him! Each Benji on the Road book includes a bookmark with the reading schedule. We will spend 10 days reading 10 chapters, only reading on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. That leaves Friday and the weekend to get caught up if you get behind. We will once again have daily questions over the previous nights reading. Throughout the program, students will have the opportunity to win prizes, learn about the real dogs that played Benji, participate in dog activities, and have a dog party with a movie at the end of our reading. It will be "pawsome"!!!!! Each family will receive a copy of Benji on the Road as a gift from the school. We usually ask for donations, but due to the crazy year that we have been through, we are giving each family a book so that no one has to worry about funding. If you would still like to donate for corresponding activities and prizes, you may still do so, but do not feel obligated. One School One Book enables families to read together at home and the opportunity for your children to talk about what they are reading with their friends and teachers. Everyone -- students, parents, teachers, and administrative staff - will be participating, thus creating a community of readers. By reading this story together, your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Our wish is that your child will enjoy this book as much as you might have when you were a child, or enjoy it together for the very first time. We know that it will be a "pawsitive" experience for everyone!!!!" Here are some pictures from Monday's "reveal"!!! Keep it up Spartans!!!
What's been happening at Exira-EHK you ask? Well, this year we have a new opportunity for our 6th grade students! They get to participate in a class called Social Emotional Wellbeing. Check out some of our Spartans working hard in the class. Here is a little bit about the class: In Social Emotional Wellbeing, 6th grade students learn how to develop healthy habits to help them be successful here at school and beyond the classroom. We do activities that help them grow in their self-awareness and in healthy relationship skills. This can be learning ways to handle strong emotions such as anger to what it means to have a growth mindset. Our goal is for them to have tools to help them with the different things that life throws at them in healthy and successful ways. Keep up the great work Spartans!!!!!
Exira-EHK Community School District will continue to require masks and social distancing expectations by students, staff, and community members when visiting school, school bus, and activities. NEW QUARANTINE GUIDELINES The CDC released new options to shorten a quarantine period. These guidelines apply to those that have been exposed to a positive COVID-19 case and remain asymptomatic. (Days figured from last day of contact with a positive COVID-19 case.) • If exposed to COVID-19 AND have no symptoms AND get tested on or after day 5 of your quarantine AND test negative, you only need to quarantine for 7 days from the date of exposure. • If you have been exposed to COVID-19 AND have no symptoms AND choose not to get tested, you only need to quarantine for 10 days from the date of exposure. • If you have been exposed to COVID-19 AND are having symptoms, you should continue your 14 day quarantine and get tested. • If you test positive at any point, you should isolate for 10 days from symptom onset or date of test (whichever occurred first). Symptom monitoring and masking should continue for the 14 days even if quarantine is shortened to the 7 day or 10 day time period. Common symptoms are loss of taste or smell, fatigue/tiredness, cough, runny nose and fever. People have also reported headaches, muscle aches, diarrhea, irritated eyes, sinus pressure and chest pain. Not everyone will experience each of these symptoms and some may only have a mild onset of 1 or 2 symptoms. COVID can mimic seasonal allergies or a mild cold. Our Spartan Youth Leadership Club (5th graders) under the new guidance of senior sponsor Tyler Petersen (HS TAG student) this year. Last year's senior, Ellie Schultes, originated the Club. This year we are having all 5th grade students participate in Grand Pals with the Exira Care Center. Once a month Tyler will lead the craft lesson that will be shared with each resident of the Care Center. Last month the students made hanging ghosts out of white cups with Halloween treats inside. This week the class sponge painted Thanksgiving Day turkeys for each of the residents! "I would like to thank Tyler Petersen, Spartan Youth Leadership Club members and the entire 5th grade Grand Pal students for making the residents day a little brighter by receiving their handmade crafts at the Exira Care Center!" stated Mrs. Dreier, Spartan Youth Leadership Club teacher sponsor and HS TAG teacher.
Our HS TAG students are serving our community during these difficult times with the Covid Pandemic. Katie Andersen and Ella Petersen are HS TAG students who create amazing monthly crafts for the residents of the Elk Horn Salem Home. They started last month by making hanging Halloween ghosts out of cups with chocolate treats for each resident of the Home with a kind note. This month the girls made adorable Happy Thanksgiving turkeys to hang up in each of their rooms. "Thank you Katie and Ella for giving the residents at Salem Home a smile on their face every time they look at the adorable turkey or cute ghost. The Salem Home director stated that the residents are grateful and appreciative of the beautiful homemade crafts and kind words they send each month!" expressed Mrs. Dreier, HS TAG Instructor.

The Exira-EHK community will be honoring the life and memory of Rochelle Bruns on Oct. 9th and 10th. Rochelle was a dedicated Exira-EHK teacher, administrator, and parent from her first year in the district: 1993-94. She will be greatly missed by all of her former and current students and staff, but also by her family, friends, and communities. The following are the details for services provided by Kessler Funeral Home in Exira. Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, Kessler Funeral Home will hold an open visitation for the community to pay last respects. The family will be present from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Sat., Oct. 10, 2020, the memorial service for Rochelle Bruns will be at the Exira-EHK football field in Exira, IA. Public seating will begin at 12:30 PM with service starting at 1:00PM. Facial coverings are expected to be worn during the services due to the large number of people who will be in attendance. Limited bleacher seats will be available, therefore, you may bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on the field or the hillside. Rochelle’s family has asked for the community to wear purple, Rochelle’s favorite color, to the services and to dress casually. Thank you to the communities of Exira, Elk Horn, Kimballton, and Brayton for your support during this difficult time. Rochelle was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister, teacher, friend, and neighbor who will be missed. She loved her community and school. We hope to remember her life and the strength she showed daily as we say our final good-byes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Mr. Miller

Hi, Seniors and Juniors! If you are interested in attending college, part of what you need to be doing right now is visiting the college admission offices, going on college visits, and learning more about program offerings. With Covid - I wanted to make you aware that most of the colleges are now doing virtual college visits as a way for students to become familiar with the campus and programs, and to get connected with the admissions office. In most cases the college's website will have this information very visible for incoming students. These virtual college visits are truly a great way to start the college selection process and get yourself connected. I would encourage you to start scheduling them right away. Please let me know if you need help signing up for a virtual college visit. Have a great day! Niki Cade Exira-EHK School Counselor

Hello Seniors and Parents! If your student is going to attend a 2 or 4 year college next year this email is very important! The 2021-22 FAFSA form will be available October 1, 2020. Each college has a priority date for the FAFSA. The form can be filled out anytime after Oct. 1 and before your college's financial aid priority date. A priority date is the date at which you can receive the maximum amount of financial aid for which you qualify. Filing after the date, there is no guarantee the funds will be available, even if you would qualify to receive them. If you are considering more than one school, look up each school's date and file by the earliest. Look up financial aid priority dates for Iowa institutions. The link below explains more about the complete FASFA process. https://www.icansucceed.org/financial-aid/financial-aid-process/fafsa If you have any questions please contact: Miss Cade email@example.com
