Welcome to Exira - EHK

We welcome you to our school district and to our website. Our schools are located in Exira and Elk Horn, Iowa, small communities in Audubon and Shelby Counties. We enjoy a strong sense of community and benefit from a high level of parent and community involvement.

Our schools offer many amenities including a one-to-one laptop computer program, as well as strong academic and extra-curricular programs. Our two schools, preschool, kindergarten, and grades 4-8 in Exira, and preschool through 3rd grade and grades 9-12 in Elk-Horn, serve over three hundred students from preschool through 12th grade.

We know you’ll love our communities as much as we do. Take a moment to browse our website and find out what’s new in our school district. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We’re always happy to serve you.

Spartan Pride PBIS Vision Statement

Spartan PrideThe vision for the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports program (PBIS) at Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton Schools is intertwined in our overall goals of creating a positive culture and promoting high achievement. PBIS is a framework for establishing the social, cultural, and behavioral supports needed for a school to be an effective learning environment for all students.

A Message from our Superintendent

We have made it through the winter months and spring has arrived. It seems as though these month were anything but normal when it came to temperatures and/or snow/rain/ice. We were lucky with what we ended up with.

The months have gone very fast for me, for it seemed as though the days were here and then gone before I knew what the day was all about. The weeks were just as fast, and before I knew it, a new month was starting. Maybe that is a sign that things are going well or maybe not so well because there is a new challenge to deal with every minute. For whatever reason, these last few months have just flown by and summer is just around the corner.

The school is presently interviewing candidates for teaching positions that have opened up to due retirements. We have offered a special education job to a young lady at the high school next year and look forward to her being here. As I write this letter, we will be interviewing for a social science position with the hopes that the new person will be able to fill the requirements that are presently being taught. As other positions may open, we hope to have them filled before school is out.

Other another note, your school tax rate will be going down again next year. Don’t be alarmed. The district is still looking very good with its balances and should be good for years to come as long as there is no sudden catastrophes that would fall upon the school district. I look for this district to be here for a number of years down the road, due to the sacrifices of the communities, parents, staff, rural, and businesses. It takes a lot of hard work to get the job done as one.

Next year will be the first year of the K-3 literacy assessment. If a third grade child is not proficient at the end of the year, it could be possible the student will have to repeat third grade. This next year will also  be the year of the new Smarter Balance testing that was to replace Iowa Assessments (ITED and ITBS). However, they have decided to delay the Smarter Balance one more year. These two programs have been deemed “Unfunded Mandates”. This means that schools will still be mandated to incorporate these programs, but the state is not going to give the schools the needed financing (unfunded) to pay for the programs. Therefore the school will have to pick up the tab to pay for the needed materials and training to incorporate these two programs.

It has been an exciting and interesting year. As the end of the school year falls upon us, we can all be proud of our district and the work that is done to keep this district running. Hats off to everyone for having a quality school district. If I don’t get a chance to write another letter, have a great summer.

Best Regards,

Dean J. Schnoes, Superintendent
Exira-Elk Horn-Kimbalton CSD
